Smart and adaptive public lighting in Catanzaro
Catanzaro, a municipality of around 85.000 inhabitants and the regional capital of Calabria in south Italy , has been running a smart lighting project for the past three years.
Revetec took part in the project by installing more than 200 devices for the remote control of switchboard parameters, about 2.000 radio-wave communicating nodes on the luminaires, and about twenty FAI (Full Adaptive Installation) adaptive lighting kits. In this way, the municipality has initiated an important energy-saving process, especially by exploiting the continuous regulation of the luminous flux through adaptive installations that analyse street luminance, traffic and weather conditions in real-time via LTM sensors.
The proposed remote control panel allows the operator to know the consumption (MID certificates) and all the electrical quantities characteristic of the supply panel. In addition, by means of the astronomical clock algorithm incorporated in the switchboard devices, the switching on and off of the systems can be regulated, leading to greater energy efficiency. Even finer telecontrol is possible by creating an intelligent network between individual lighting points, equipped with LPR telecontrol nodes, and the devices within the switchboard (DimmyWeb, LPM, LPM/R). In this case, thanks to the development of a radio frequency telecontrol network, future intelligent devices will be able to interface via radio waves with Maestro software, making Catanzaro a real smart city.
The radio frequency telecontrol network is also very useful for adaptive FAI regulation of the system. The LTM sensor collects and processes road luminance, vehicle traffic (in terms of vehicles/hour), and evaluates debilitating weather conditions (wet road, foggy or snowy, dry road) in real time. This allows further energy savings compared to point-to-point control, without ever neglecting road safety aspects.
